Oracle – Check instances and start/stop them

To check running instances, you could simply use

ps -aux

and check for the instances running under oracle user.

If you don’t know which instances are present, check the oratab

cat /etc/oratab

Once found,  set your Oracle environment using (under oracle user)

. oraenv

Now connect using

sqlplus / as sysdba

And start or stop the instance

startup

shutdown immediate
